The carboxymethylation reaction is one of the etherification techniques. Carboxymethylation of cellulose gives carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Its aqueous solution has the functions of thickening, film formation, adhesion, moisture retention, colloid protection, emulsification and suspension.


It is widely used in petroleum, food and medicine. The textile, paper and other industries are among the most important cellulose ethers.
